Portugal
There are many of ways that Portuguese citizenship can be obtained which are outlined below.
Individuals with Portuguese heritage can obtain Portuguese citizenship in a variety of ways,
Such applications can be made if you meet one of the following criteria;
A non-Portuguese national married to a Portuguese national for three years or longer can apply for Portuguese citizenship.
Although it is not a direct requirement to know the Portuguese language, it is very important to show your ties to Portugal and the Portuguese community. Examples of ties to Portugal include having a basic (A2 or better) knowledge of the Portuguese language, owning property in Portugal, and living in or showing significant travel to the country. The more ties you can show, the better. Having a child with a Portuguese national is also considered a tie to Portugal and in this case, a language certificate would not be required.
Individuals who were citizens of countries that were formerly Portuguese colonies who were born during Portuguese rule and their children may be able to apply for Portuguese citizenship. These include;
Goa, Daman, Diu, Dadra or Nagar Haveli
Anyone born in these former Portuguese territories during the Portuguese sovereignty, i.e. until 19th December 1961 can apply for citizenship. Descendants to parents or grandparents that were born in the territories listed above during the period of Portuguese may also apply, in which case they must prove residence during the period between 1974 and 1975.
East Timor or Timor-Lest
Those with parents born in Timor-Leste until April 26 1976 can also apply for Portuguese citizenship. Since its independence, children of Portuguese parents born in Timor-Leste are eligible to apply for Portuguese nationality.
Macau
Citizens born in the former Portuguese territory of Macau are considered Portuguese citizens, including their descendants, and may apply for citizenship if they were born during the Portuguese sovereignty, i.e. until November 21st 1981.
You can also apply if you are a descendant of parents or grandparents that were born in Macau until December 20th 1999 or if you were born after 20 December 1999 to Portuguese parents from Macau or Macanese parents that hold Portuguese citizenship.
Cape Verde, Angola, Mozambique, Guinea Bissau and Sao Tome and Principe
Citizens of these countries were Portuguese until the date of the independence. After this, many lost their Portuguese nationality.
Upon independence from Portugal, many lost their Portuguese nationality. However, some were able to maintain their citizenship and in this case, their descendants may apply.
Those whose parents or grandparents were born and died before these countries’ independence can also apply for Portuguese citizenship.
Those who can demonstrate evidence of having legally resided in Portugal for a minimum of five years can apply for Portuguese citizenship. Certification of the Portuguese language to at least an A2 level on the CEFR scale must be provided in this case, however, those who have acquired further education in Portugal may apply without such certification.
