There are two main stages involved
An application is submitted for the Digital Nomad Visa at the nearest Portuguese consulate in your country of citizenship or permanent residence.
Once the visa has been approved, you will be allowed entry into Portugal and once there you will request a residency permit at SEF within that time frame.
The documentation you have to present is not always easy to collate and on many occasions, is bound to involve long waiting periods with public administration. Our English-speaking, Portuguese immigration specialist lawyers will provide you with a full hand-holding service throughout the entirety of your application.
The Digital Nomad Visa is aimed at those planning to work in Portugal fora minimum of six months to two years and provides two options, Temporary Stay and Long Stay.
The Temporary Stay for a Digital Nomad visa is valid for six months and can be renewed from within Portugal for another six months, without the applicant becoming a tax resident. In this case, the applicant may stay one year in Portugal.
It is also possible to apply for Long Stay where, initially, you will receive a visa granting you two entries into Portugal.
This will be valid for a four-month period, during which you would attend an interview with AIMA. Shortly after, you will receive your residence permit which will be valid for two years which is renewable for two year periods provided that you continue to meet the requirements
At the end of the fifth year of legal residence in Portugal, you may then apply for Portuguese Citizenship and/or a permanent residence permit (valid for 10 years).
Family members such as a spouse or dependent children are also entitled to apply for a residence permit via Family Reunification for which you will have to demonstrate:
• Spouse: €9,840 in demonstrable savings
• Children: €2,952 per child in demonstrable savings
